Ulm

A former free imperial city, Ulm was also the seat of the Swabian league of towns and a fortress of the German Confederation (once the largest fortress complex in Europe). Starting point for former barge and boat transport (Ulmer Schachteln), the city is still the cultural and economic centre of Eastern Württemberg and many parts of the Swabian Alb and Upper Swabia.

Ulm is a university city and a leading location for trade fairs and industry and science with its distinguished research institutes.  It is situated at the important intersection of the motorways A7 and A8 with ICE train connections.
