Ingolstadt

Ingolstadt

The second-largest city in Upper Bavaria is not only the cultural centre of an important economic region, it is also one of the settings in Mary Shelley's 'Dr. Frankenstein' and the place where, in 1516, the Bavarian Purity Law for beer was promulgated. The wonderfully preserved historical buildings more than entitle the town to rank among the circle of Old Bavarian seats of royal power. There are many cultural events to go to in the former duchy, university town and military stronghold throughout the year.  Take time to saunter through remarkable museums or relax in the water meadows of the Danube.  Enjoy typical Bavarian specialities at quaint restaurants and the hospitality provided by excellent hotels and guesthouses.  Go shopping - maybe even get a bargain or two - at the Ingolstadt Village outlet shopping centre.

Places to see:

New Castle (15th century), Old Castle (13th century); Asam church 'Maria de Victoria', minster 'Zur Schönen Unserer Lieben Frau' and the church of St. Moritz (oldest parish church); Franciscan monastery  (Minoriten) and Gnadenthal Abbey; mediaeval gable facades in both the Ludwigstrasse and the Theresienstraße; Ickstatthaus (Baroque, 18th century), Jesuit library (Rococo), neo-classical fortifications (Leo von Klenze); Bavarian army museum, German medical-historical museum, town museum with special sections on toys and farming instruments, art museum 'Museum für Konkrete Kunst', Alf Lechner Museum, documentary information on Marieluise Fleißer, museum of local history 'Niemes Prachatitz', 'Audi museum mobile' at  the Audi Forum Ingolstadt, Danube floodplain and Glacis.
