Großmehring

The municipality lies north of the Danube and about 6 kms east of Ingolstadt. Neolithic finds were made in the vicinity (graves and burial mounds). Several skeletons from the Münchshöfen culture ( about 4,200 B.C.) were also discovered. The two towers of the E.ON Energie AG, 200 m and 180 m high, have become the landmark of the municipality. Großmehring is classified as a small town (having between 5,000 and 10,000 inhabitants). INTERPARK, a large commercial area, is being developed in the west of the municipality.

Places to see:

There are a number of interesting churches and chapels, especially the Old Parish Church and the new church of St. Wolfgang, and the statue of the Virgin Mary in the centre of the municipality. Nibelungen memorial north of the Danube and Nibelungen fountain at the town hall; Prince Charles fort near the Katharinenberg, landscape conservation area and bird sanctuary south of the Danube, landscape conservation area around the Demlingen quarry.

Things to do:

Connection to the bike trail network in the Altmühl valley national park; hiking trails around the Demlingen quarry and along the Danube; skating area with half pipe near the Nibelungen Hall; lakes for swimming to the north and south of the Danube; concert and theatre performances by the Men's Choir Association and the Association for Traditional Costumes, and also hiking days organised by the Hiking Association.
