PASSAU - the THREE_RIVER_TOWN

On the blue Danube, the green Inn and the black Ilz
Welcome to Passau! Three rivers from three directions – the Danube from the west, the Inn from the south, and the Ilz from the north, lend the city on the triple-river triangle its unique beauty. Along their banks, the three-river city of Passau was established and has grown over many thousands of years. Today, it is home to over 50,000 residents. Passau's central geographical location within the tri-country region of Lower Bavaria (Germany), Upper Austria (Austria)  and Bohemia (Szechia) is the perfect starting point for short and long excursions.

To every era there is a season
The earliest artifacts found in Passau date from the mesolithic and neolithic periods. Settled by the Celts in 100 B.C., Passau was a Roman provincial town for over 400 years, starting in mid 1 A.D., with two border forts. In the late classical antiquity period, the historical city was called "Batavis", which shifted to "Bazauue, Pazzowe", and finally the modern name of Passau. With the establishment of an episcopal residence in 739, the city life of Passau began to develop. Bishops became rulers of the independent, small principality of Passau, which existed for almost 600 years around 1200. During that time, the royal capital of Passau experienced its heyday in the intellectual, cultural and economic spheres, and achieved an excellent position between the states of Bavaria, Bohemia and Upper-Austria.

Perfected by the hands of Italian masters
Devastating fires in the year 1662 reduced the proud, Gothic bishopric seat, including the cathedral, residence, churches and residential housing, to rubble. In the following decades of reconstruction, Italian Baroque masters, using the ruins from the fires, created today's city skyline, with its southern European flair. St. Steven's Cathedral, housing the largest catholic church organ in the world (233 stops, 17,974 pipes and five individual organs). The Baroque design of Passau is dominated by large squares, romantic promenades, winding lanes and majestic bridges, framed by the Veste Oberhaus castle and the pilgrimage church Mariahilf.

Art, culture and linghtness of being
In the spirit of the tradition and history, major cultural institutions have been established in the modern era: the annual European Weeks Festival, productions of the City Theatre, satirical cabaret and jazz shows in the ScharfrichterHaus, as well as a number of other open-air events, concert series and festivals. These options are rounded out by various museums. Since 1978 have been able to pursue the law, philosophy, Business Studies and Mathematics/Informatics at the University of Passau.

A dream of waves
Water and shipping have always been integral components to life in Passau. Of the three Passau rivers, only the Danube still plays a siginificant role in European inland shipping. In addition to its "three-river" city tour, the local shipping company also offers excursion rides lasting several hours into the Bavarian and Austrian Danube valley. You can also take the cruise of your dreams on a cabin cruiser to the countrysides of the Danube lands through Vienna and Budapest and to the Black Sea.

Cyclist´s and walker´s paradise
Passau is also a real paradise for people who love to do walking or cycling tours. Due to Passau’s unique situation at the rivers Danube, Inn, and Ilz, as well as to its closeness to the Bavarian Forest, to the Czech Republic, and to Austria, the visitor is offered a lot of possibilities to do major and minor trips.
