Leipheim

Leipheim

The city of Leipheim not only offers its visitors living history but also great outdoors. Founded in the 6th century, a first castle was built in the 11th century to secure the Donau-passage. Up to these days the castle is the main feature of a city in which history, culture and tradition are highly valued. Highlight of the year is the “Kinderfest” (“children´s party”), celebrated on the second weekend of July – founded as Thanksgiving after a hunger crisis in the years of 1816/1817. Other main features of Leipheim are the unique natural paradises in the surroundings: the Danube riparian forest (Donauauwald) and the Danube Moss.

Places to see:

The old town of Leipheim is a real showcase with a town center of the middle ages centered around the castle and church, buildings from the 17th to the 19th century and a surrounding wall including a moat. Outstanding is the Church of Saint Veit from 1448, the only church in proper gothic style in the district of Günzburg and the castle of Leipheim from 1559. The castle is a private property nowadays but visitors can have a look from outside and have access to the castle courtyard and the “Zehntstadel” from 1583, a former agricultural building which is now used as a cultural centre. Next to the castle visitors can take a look at the “Blaue Ente”, the museum of local history and the peasant uprisings.

Things to do:

Since 1993 the Leipheim Moss (part of the Swabian Danube Moss) is a protected area: an unique biotope of nourishment, brood and rest – not only for the different kind of birds like storks or prairie owls. The visitors of Leipheim can explore this low moor on different trails or – with help of an application for mobile devices like an iPod – go on a self guided “listening tour” where experts offer information about the moss. There is also a part of the Danube cycle route leading through Leipheim, formed by the Danube riparian forest, on the way from Ulm to Günzburg. For recreation visitors do find the so called “Garden Indoor swimming pool” or the “Soccer Golf course” in Leipheim – and much more.
