District of Sigmaringen

Danube municipalities in the district:

Beuron, Leibertingen, Sigmaringen, Sigmaringendorf, Scheer, Mengen, Herbertingen.

The district encompasses a wide variety of natural and cultural landscapes such as the Swabian Alb, the Danube gorge through the Alb, the Upper Danube national park and the Baroque landscape of Upper Swabia with its hills and lakes. An extensive, well-developed and signposted network of cycling and hiking trails, palaces, castles, monasteries and interesting sights from all eras of history promise the visitor an exhilerating, reenergising experience. Several tourist routes (Hohenzollern Road, Upper Swabian Baroque Road, Swabian Poets' Road) go through the fascinating district of Sigmaringen.  A graphics' information system for tourists provides visual information on places of interest, overnight accommodation, events, etc..

Places to see in the district:

Inzigkofen: former monastery with agricultural museum, herb garden and adult education centre, princely park with the 'Amalienfelsen' cliffs, Devil's Bridge, grottoes and the lookout point 'Känzele' with a view to the Danube valley;  Meßkirch: castle, Baroque church of St. Martin, birthplace and grave of Martin Heidegger;  Engelswies: pilgrimage church of St. Maria and Verena;  Pullendorf: churches of St. Jacob and Maria Schray, 'Old House' (oldest half-timbered building in South West Germany, dated 1317), historical townscape, Upper Gate;  Bad Saulgau: St. John's Parish Church, Swedish Chapel, historical townscape, abbey church of Siessen (abbey: hummel figures designed here);  Bingen: Hornstein ruins, church of St. Nicholas; Veringenstadt: ruins, Strüb house and museum, church of St. Michael's in Veringendorf (oldest church of the Hohenzollern dynasty); Wald: monastery with Baroque church; Ostrach-Habstahl: monastery; Mengen-Ennetach: Roman museum;  Herbertingen-Hundersingen: open-air museum, Heuneburg museum; Wildenstein Castle (now a youth hostel) high above the young Danube.
