District Neuburg-Schrobenhausen
District of Neuburg-Schrobenhausen
Danube municipalities in the district:
Bertoldsheim, Rennertshofen, Stepperg, Riedensheim, Neuburg on the Danube, Weichering.
The district, located to the west of Ingolstadt, is characterised by three different types of landscape: the Franconian Jura north of the Danube, the fens of the Donaumoos in the middle, and the rolling hills of the 'Tertiary hill country' around Schrobenhausen. Typical for the Donaumoos - and an unusual scenic feature for visitors - are the absolutely straight roads, the numerous water ditches, the black peat soil and the characteristic rows of houses and farms along the roadside. To the north of the Donaumoos, the town hill of Neuburg on the Danube stands out with its palace, the princely church, provincial library and historical Old Town. Towards the east there is a view of the Grünau hunting lodge. The abbey church of Bergen with its romantic crypt lies hidden in a Jura valley not far to the north of Neuburg on the Danube. The hilly countryside around Schrobenhausen is not only famous as the birthplace of the aristocratic painter Franz von Lenbach, but also for an exquisite plant belonging to the lily family that has put the town on the international map. Schrobenhausen asparagus is much sought-after and grows in the light, sandy soil around the town. Even a museum has been dedicated to it: the 'European Asparagus Museum' is to be found in the town's historical 'Amtsturm'.
Places to see in the district:
Bertoldsheim castle, Hütting castle ruins, small palaces of Niederarnbach and Sandizell and the Asam church in Sandizell, pilgrimage church 'Maria Beinberg' in Gachenbach, European Asparagus Museum and Lenbach Museum in Schrobenhausen, open-air museum and environmental education centre 'Haus im Moos' in Karlshuld-Kleinhohenried, mixed forests, lowland forests, Donaumoos and dry grassland. The northern part of the district as far as the Danube lies in the Altmühl valley national park; for further information on Haus im Moos, please see 'Environmental Education Centres along the German Danube'.
Things to do in the district:
Numerous bike trails go through the district ('Biking between the Danube and the Paar' and 'Atlas of excursions through Schrobenhausen's asparagus country'). In Rennertshofen there is a connection through the Danube floodplain to the bike trail network of the Altmühl valley national park and the long-distance bike trail Amper-Altmühl; several hiking trails; open-air and indoor swimming pools in Neuburg and Schrobenhausen; numerous lakes near the Danube. Annual asparagus season from mid-April to mid-June and potato weeks in October.
