District of Dillingen on the Danube

Danube municipalities in the Dillingen district:

Gundelfingen, Lauingen, Dillingen, Höchstädt, Blindheim and Schwenningen.

The Dillingen district is characterised by the expanse of the Danube valley. It is the natural beauty of the lowland forests and the lakes as well as the bird santuaries of Donauried  that make a vist particularly worthwhile. Just as enchanting as the Danube valley are the foothills of the Swabian Alb that extend into the district from the north with the valleys of Egau, Kessel and Zwergbach. The landscape is of special interest on account of the caves and dry grass valleys, while at the southern edge of the Danube valley it is the transition into 'Augsburg's western forests' national park that attracts hikers, walkers and biking enthusiasts. In addition to the superb abundance of natural amenities available for the appreciation of nature, the Danube towns boast a wide range of sites concerning the history of civilisation. The powerful examples of architecture and the names of the master builders alone provide sufficent record of the significance of these towns throughout history.  But there is also ample evidence of ancient cultures, which partly originates from the excavations carried out in the region and which can be seen in the various museums (more information under towns). This, too, bears witness to the long historical background of the region.  Along with the towns, the deeply rural Swabian villages offer strikingly beautiful glimpses into well cared for farm gardens and inviting village squares that tempt the visitor to stay a while.  The diving and sailing options in the lakes around the Nusseralm are legendary among hobby sportspeople, as is the unrivalled waterski complex at the Haldensee  near Gundelfingen. You can also keep fit in a completely different way at the DSV Nordic walking site in Holzheim-Ellerbach.

Places to see in the district apart from the towns:

Binswangen: Catholic chapel 'Bruderschaftskapelle zur Mutter Gottes vom Berge', central building with dome and two towers from 1617, recently renovated former synagogue in Moorish architectural style (1835-1836); Buttenwiesen-Pfaffenhofen: Catholic parish church of St. Martin by Joseph Schmutzer, 1722/23;
Buttenwiesen-Vorderried: Catholic church 'Filialkirche St. John the Baptist' (clay madonna from 1410/20); Haunsheim: Evangelic-Lutheran parish church of Holy Trinity from 1606-1609 (only ecclesiasical building in Germany to have been preserved unchanged in the Renaissance style). Churchyard with uniformly designed oak crosses on graves; Medlingen-Obermedlingen: convent church Mariä Himmelfahrt  from 1700-1721; Mödingen: convent church Mariä Himmelfahrt from 1716-1721, first building by Dominikus Zimmermann; Wertingen: complex with two palaces from 14th / 17th centuries, Bächingen: Swabian Danube valley mooseum-Forum (please see page on environmental education centres).

Things to do in the district:
