This part of Old Bavaria is characterised by the various types of landscape and by its history, which goes back beyong the reach of memory. It took many thousands of years for the Danube to create the Weltenburg Danube gorge - a unique wonder of nature - by carving a bizarre panorama of cliffs in the Jurassic rock of what has today become the river bed of the Altmühl. Hops grow in the fields of the fertile, rolling hills of the Hallertau: 'green gold', as it is called locally. Quiet river valleys and extensive deciduous and coniferous forests beckon visitors. This is the place to come hiking or simply unwind. Ice Age cave dwellers, Celts and Romans have all left their mark here and history's great cultural eras are convincingly expressed through castles, palaces and magnificent churches. The district of Kelheim is a treasure trove for lovers of nature and history and offers an abundance of recreational activities to those who are seeking a relaxing, rejuvenating holiday.
