Klostergarten Oberelchingen

District Neu-Ulm

Danube and Iller, Roth, Biber, and Osterbach – wide rivers and peaceful brooklets come together in the district of Neu-Ulm. Shady lowland forests and green valleys with gentle hills shape the landscape. The most picturesque nooks are connected by five cycle tracks, with their average length of approximately 25 miles perfect for families, passing the monastery buildings of Oberelchingen and Roggenburg, the medieval Fugger town Weissenhorn, churches and museums. Enthusiastic swimmers have fun for free in six natural-looking lakes with outstanding water quality. Several adventure and leisure pools complete the offers for grown-up and young guests. Enjoy Bavarian-Swabian „Gemutlichkeit“ in secluded beer-gardens and cozy inns.

The Danube cycle track passes the commune of Elchingen with its parts Thalfingen, Ober- and Unterelchingen. Even the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was here once: On october 16th, 1805, he visited the Benedictine abbey church at Oberelchingen, erected by convent master builder Joseph Dossenberger. „C’est vraiment le salon du Bon Dieu“ (This is really dear God’s Saloon) he is reported to have called out when admiring the early classicistic church, all decorated in white and gold and sitting on top of a hill high above the Danube valley. The reason for his visit, alas, was less peaceful: His victory over the Austrian army is on the historic record as „the battle of Oberelchingen“.

Worth yet another detour is the Museum of Fine Arts of the district of Neu-Ulm at Nersingen-Oberfahlheim with ist collection of contemporary art. Pure culture can be found everywhere in the district with its various museums, the Historical Town Theater Weissenhorn, the Open-Air-Stage „Schwabenbuehne“ at Illertissen, or the concerts of the „Roggenburger Sommer“.
