Donauwörth

In Donauwörth, "the Bavarian-swabian Danube pearl on the Romantic Road", guests will find no end of opportunities for sports and cultural leisure-time activities.   In times gone by, the former free imperial city had provided shelter within its defiant town walls to almost every emperor from Barbarossa (+1190) to Joseph II (+1790).  After all, the thousand-year-old town with its bridge over the River Danube was the final destination for ships from Vienna right up until the year 1874.  There were, admittedly, times when this Swabian-Bavarian-Franconian corner of the world had suffered from the bitter afflictions of war.  On 11th and 19th April 1945, the town was all but razed to the ground.  But today, after the successful redevelopment of the town, a walk through the magnificent 'Imperial Street', which is praised as one of the most beautiful residential streets in Southern Germany, allows an encounter with history to become an unforgettably positive experience.  The Tanzhaus and the Gothic town hall still bear witness to the continued pride of the town's citizens.  The 'Schwäbischwerder Children's Day' takes place here every year in July: an exquisitely colourful event in which over 1,000 children act out the history of their town, which is, in fact, in many cases the history of the empire.  Every autumn the 'Donauwörth Cultural Days' offer events of the highest artistic standing.  Donauwörth pays tribute to important people in its most recent history through its museums of national interest and the 'Werner Egk Meeting Place'.

Places to see:

Ruins of the 10th century Castle Mangoldstein (destroyed in the year 1301) on the promenade.
