Neuburg on the Danube

Neuburg on the Danube, former capital and princely residence of  the principality of Pfalz-Neuburg, is situated high up above the southern banks of the Danube on Jurassic rocks.  Even from the distance, the 'Upper Town' reigns over the lovely Danube valley and its impressive silhouette has hardly changed for years.

The heyday of the town began in the year 1505 when Neuburg became the capital of the palatinate 'Junge Pfalz'.  The Neuburg princes had a great influence on the townscape, reshaping it with Renaissance and Baroque elements. Many buildings still bear witness to the town's prosperous cultural heritage: the palace, the hunting lodge at Grünau, the Karlsplatz, surrounded by lime trees, the town hall, the palace church and the provincial library.

Sightseeing:

The castle with chapel (Bocksberger frescoes, the eldest Protestant church in the world) and the Palace Museum with the departments: the principality of Pfalz-Neuburg, baroque churches and archaeology museum; the State Gallery Flemish Baroque Painting in the castle; entire old town, closed ensemble of Renaissance and Baroque with the Provincial Library, St. Peter’s Church, Court Church and the Holy Spirit Church, pilgrimage church Holy Cross in the village of Bergen.

Things to experience:

Cycling and hiking trails in and around Neuburg, Danube cycling trail, the end of the Main-Danube trail; Outdoor and indoor swimming pool, and various swimming ponds; the “Danube Swim” in January, river jousting competition in May, Audi Summer Concerts (July), Neuburg chamber opera (July), Baroque concerts (October), Bergen Church concert (October), Neuburg Castle Festival (every 2 years, next in 2011 and 2013), and open air theatre performances (every 2 years, next in 2012), Christmas market at the Karlsplatz.
