Donau-Heuberg (Fridingen-Mühlheim)

Donau-Heuberg is a recreation area located in the Upper Danube national park in the Swabian Alb region (Grosser Heuberg) and includes the towns of Bärenthal, Buchheim, Fridingen on the Danube, Irndorf, Kolbingen, Mühlheim on the Danube and Renquishausen.  Most of these places are state-recognised recreation and holiday resorts.  The scenic beauty of the region with its array of castles, ruins, palaces, churches and nature reserves is a perfect backdrop for hiking and biking on signposted trails.  There are numerous tours available.

Places to see:

Bärenthal:

Pfannenstiel ruins, church of St. John, watermill at Ensisheim Castle, hedge nature trail Vogelbühl/ Gnadenweiler, Hüttenberg juniper moorland nature reserve, ruins of Burg Lengenfeld, rock caves, rock formations, e.g. Mondmilchloch;

Buchheim:

Bronnen Palace, Kallenberg ruins, church of St. Stefanus, lookout tower 'Langer Hans', vantage points Kaiserstand and Kohlsattfelsen, Buttental cave;

Fridingen:

Lookout tower 'Gansnest', Ifflinger Palace and Upper Danube Valley museum, church of St. Martin, chapel of St. Anna, historical town centre with houses built onto the town wall, the Danube sink near the town, vantage points Stiegelfels, Laibfels, Knopfmacherfels and Rissefels, nature adventure trail on the Knopfmacher, 'Mattheisen Käppele';

Irndorf:

nature reserve 'Hardt' (rock gardens), vantage points Irndorfer Hardt nature reserve and Simonstal, church of St. Peter, Spaltfelsen;

Kolbingen:

Kolbingen stalactite cave, church of Jesus Christ the Redeemer and St. Xystus, nature reserve 'Hintelestal' (flowering daffodils), forest nature trail  'Wasenhalde', vantage points 'Frauenfels', 'Rappen and Wachfelsen';

Mühlheim:

Palace, Kraftstein ruins, ruins of 'Maria Hilf' on the Welschenberg (place of pilgrimage), churches of Maria Magdalena and St. Nicolas, chapels of  St. Sebastian, St. Gallus and St. Veit, upper town with town gate, town hall in the historical upper town, Front Palace and museum;

M.-Stetten:

Kraftstein nature reserve;

Renquishausen:

Church of St. Stephanus, chapel of Judas Thaddäus, wind farm,  forest nature trail 'Kirchholz'.

Things to do:

Extensive hiking and biking network in the region with magnificent lookout points, eg. Eichfelsen and Rauher Stein near Irndorf ( with a view into the rock valley of the Danube and of castles, palaces and ruins);  guided tours of the stalactite cave at Kolbingen; art exhibitions in the 'Langer Hans' at Buchheim; fishing, open-air swimming pool, and theatre performances in the open-air theatre 'Steintäle' at Fridingen; indoor swimming pool, concerts at the palace and night-watchman tours at Mühlheim.
