Places to see:

Former ducal palace (building was begun in 1356 by Duke Albrecht I.), Gäuboden museum with the world-famous 'Roman treasure trove' and highlights of the Bavarii finds (regular special exhibitions), Romanesque basilica of St. Peter with one of the most significant graveyards in the German-speaking region (around 1180), church of the Ursulines (last joint project of the Asam brothers, 1736 - 41), basilica of St. Jacob with Moses window by Albrecht Dürer (Late Gothic), Carmelite church (Late Gothic, Baroque features added), pilgrimage churches of Sossau and Frauenbrünnl, elongated Gothic town square with the five spires of the town's tower (landmark, 68 m high), Jacob's well, Tiburtius well, Holy Trinity pillar, remains of the town wall, gunpowder tower, late mediaeval houses with gables or flat roofs.  The magnificent sights in the town can best be seen within the scope of a guided tour.  Designated tours are offered on many topics such as the Middle Ages, the Straubing-Holland dukedom, Agnes Bernauer, house facades, etc.

Pilgrimage church of Bogenberg, Rococo church of Loh (Danube reaction ferry at Stephansposching), abbey church of Oberalteich.

Open-air and indoor swimming pool 'AQUAtherm' - of thermal and mineral water quality; only zoo in East Bavaria with a total of over 1,700 animals of 200 different kinds, Danubium (in the zoo) with outdoor areas for beavers and fish otters, former grounds of the state garden show with a lookout tower at the Eisweiher;  East Bavaria's biggest trotting course; boat trips on the Danube; numerous concerts in the historical town hall, the Rittersaal (Herzogsschloss) and in the Joseph-von-Fraunhofer Hall; performances of the Southeast Bavarian Towns' Theatre and other theatre groups in the Am Hagen theatre; Gäuboden fun fair with the East Bavarian Show (second-largest fun fair in Bavaria annually in mid-August), Straubing Spring (annually in April/May),  international jazz festival 'Jazz on the Danube' (annually mid-July), Agnes Bernauer Festival (June/July every four years).
