For centuries, Dillingen was the residence and university town of the ducal bishops of Augsburg, who felt far more at home there than they did in the imperial city of Augsburg. They ruled over their large secular territory from Dillingen and lent the town the splendours of a court that, even today, are still felt by visitors to the numerous places of historical interest in the heart of the town (between the middle gate tower and what was once the university church, and between the castle and the basilica of St. Peter). The garrison is one of the oldest in Bavaria. Many important people have made the town famous: Reverend Kneipp first put his world-famous cold water treatment to the test in Dillingen, Johann Evangelist Wagner had a great influence on the charitable spirit throughout Bavaria through the foundation of the Regens Wagner charitable trusts and their institutes for the disabled; and also the inventor of the submarine, Wilhelm Bauer, came from Dillingen. In addition to the many places of interest, a wide range of leisure-time activities and events make a visit to the charming town well worth while.
