The district of Eichstätt lies in the middle of the Altmühl Valley Nature Park.  Craggy cliffs, Jurassic rock faces crowned with castles, palaces and ruins, deciduous and coniferous forests, picturesque towns and villages all lend exceptional beauty to the landscape around Eichstätt.  An extensive network of signposted hiking trails, 48 nature trails, and designated bike trails tempt you to spend your leisure time in an active way.  The district has a lot to offer those who are interested in history and culture: Celtic and Roman fortifications, for example the Roman fort at Pfünz with its reconstructed north gate or the 'Celeusum' fort near Pförring, the well preserved Prince Charles fort near Katharinenberg, Romanesque and Gothic churches and the art treasures of the episcopal town of Eichstätt. Hobby palaeontologists will find information on fossils in numerous museums and can even try their hand at finding some fossils in a fossil quarry. If you are interested in geology a trip to Urdonautal dry valley is a good idea - a geological hiking trail between Dollnstein and Wellheim gives you information about th different diversions of the Danube in the course of time.  The holiday locations in the district offer a huge range of leisure activities including fishing, tennis, boating and climbing.  Modern, comfortable hotels and guesthouses, traditional cuisine and the hospitality of local people all have a share in ensuring that you will spend an interesting, relaxing and healthy holiday in the district.

Wackerstein Castle, ruins of Nassenfels and Wellheim castles; pilgrimage churches of St. Salvator in Bettbrunn and the Holy Cross church in Altmannstein;  Roman 'Villa Rustica' in Möckenlohe; weapons and weaponry and hammer mill at Hexenagger, Danube Floodplain Museum in Wellheim; dry grass valley (Danube floodplain Dollnstein Rennertshofen) at Wellheim; exhibitions on nature, culture and leisure activities at the Altmühl valley national park information centre.

Extensive network of bike trails with connections to the Danube floodplain valley and to Ingolstadt;  circular routes for hiking, excursion hiking trails, long-distance hiking trails, nature trails and guided walks; luggage-free hiking; heated outdoor swimming pools in Altmannstein and Wellheim; open-air swimming pool and water park 'Aquamarin' in Gaimersheim.
