Map of the Danube / Herbertingen
The municipality in Upper Swabia, well-known for cultural and leisure-time activities, is situated in a landscape that provides ample evidence of prehistory and early history. The fortified citadel 'Heuneberg', one of the most important Celtic princely seats in Europe, and already in existence at the time of the Hallstatt culture, is a prime example.
Places to see:
In the municipality district of Hundersingen: the open-air museum 'Celtic Princely Seat of Heuneburg', comprising an 80-metre-long Celtic fortified wall with a roofed walkway, a dwelling with a workshop building and store, and also the dwelling of a local ruler from the heyday of the Celtic hillfort 2,500 years ago. The fortified wall was an air-dried, mudbrick structure. (The open-air museum also has a kiosk area). The excavation finds from the Heuneberg are on show at the Heuneberg museum in Hundersingen, where an impressive diorama of the ancient princely seat can also be seen. There are many Celtic burial mounds in the vicinity of the Heuneburg and the so-called 'Hohmichele' (largest Celtic burial mound in Europe) is particularly worth mentioning.
Things to do:
Seven Chapel circular hiking trail with the Stations of the Cross, leisure centre Schwarzachtalseen (camping, swimming, surfing, fishing) between Herbertingen and Ertingen. In the municipality district of Hundersingen: archeological hiking trail to the Celtic places of interest (round trip); from the Heuneburg plateau there is a wonderful view into the Danube valley and the landscape of Upper Swabia as far as the Alps.
