20 The Gaißa valley in Passau

Start Passau

From Passau main station, the tour starts on the Danube cycle path upstream via the impressive Kachlet hydroelectric power station in the direction of Vilshofen. You reach the small river Gaißa, which you follow uphill through the idyllic "Gaißatal" nature reserve. The route leads through the forest area around the Dachsberg on well-maintained forest paths. Above the slopes of the Danube, the route now leads at ground level to the Veste Oberhaus castle complex. As one of the largest preserved castle complexes in Europe, it towers above the town and is not only a magnificent cultural monument, but also contains several museums and a viewing tower that offers a 360-degree panoramic view from the roof. A unique and fascinating spectacle of nature and colour can be admired from the Veste: the blue-brown Danube, the green Inn and the black Ilz unite at the Dreiflüsseeck and flow on together as the Danube. Return via Rennweg with a view to the right of the impressive remains of the ruins of Hals Castle (privately owned), a once mighty count's castle that towers over the Ilz on a steep rocky ridge in the Hals district. The tour leads downhill along Neue Rieser Straße towards the city centre. A short stop at the "Schönblick-Kurve" (car park) is rewarded with a magnificent view of Passau's old town, which is just waiting to be discovered.
